Fred Martin joined MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory in 1956. He first started working on analog autopilots and fire control systems before moving on to the Polaris program. After the Polaris program, he joined the MITIL effort on programming the Apollo Guidance Computer. He became the project manager of the Command and Service module software starting in Apollo 8. In 1969, Martin left the MIT Instrumentation Lab to join a startup called Intermetrics, which primarily worked on NASA contracts.
