Ruth Handler served as the president of Mattel Inc., and is best remembered for inventing the Barbie doll. In 1970, Handler was diagnosed with breast cancer. Ruth had a modified radical mastectomy, and due to difficulties in finding a good breast prosthesis, she decided to make her own. Handler went on to found a company, Ruthton Corp., which manufactured a more realistic version of a woman's breast, called "Nearly Me".
