G-Type Tape Recorder

Edit Profile

  • Announcement / Release: January 1950
  • Discontinuation: around 1955
  • Birthplace: Tokyo, Japan

Japan's first reel-to-reel tape recorder

When released, the recorder was viewed as a product for government use, hence the G in G Type. The recording medium was actually long-fiber craft paper ordered from a mill, onto which dissolved magnetic powder was painted. Users found the recorder neatly organized, with the transport system on top and recording controls on the front. Carrying handles on both sides made the 35 kg unit somewhat easier to carry.
